Udaaya Museum

Udaaya Museum

Nestled in the heart of the vibrant Ason area, the Udaaya Museum emerges as a beacon of cultural preservation and historical significance. Managed by the Udaaya Samaj, a collective of nine distinguished sub-castes within the Newa community - Tuladhar, Kansakar, Tamrakar, Sthapit, Baniya, Shikrakar, Shilaakar, Silalik, and Sindurakar - the museum stands as a testament to the rich heritage and enduring traditions of these native groups. Despite its central location, museum officials note a surprising scarcity of local visitors, a reflection perhaps of the modern challenges faced by traditional institutions.

Since its informal inception in 2013, thanks to the initiative of the women of the Udaaya Samaj, and its formal inauguration in 2014 by cultural luminary Satya Mohan Joshi, the museum has endeavored to capture and exhibit the essence of Newa culture. Museum Coordinator Suman Kamal Tuladhar, whose vision and dedication have been pivotal in the museum's development, voices a common concern among visitors regarding the museum's physical space. The issue of inadequate parking underscores a broader struggle for recognition and appreciation in a rapidly modernizing context.

  • Tuladhar's journey, from feeling lost in her cultural identity while abroad to spearheading the museum's creation, underscores the profound need for cultural documentation and preservation. Her experiences abroad, where inquiries about Newa culture left her searching for answers, fueled her determination to establish a repository of knowledge and heritage. Through the support of the Udaaya Samaj, including Chairperson Roop Jyoti Kansakar, and contributions from the community, the museum now houses a diverse collection. This collection ranges from traditional household items and ceremonial artifacts to visual representations of the Newa lifestyle, each telling a story of the unique contributions of the sub-castes to the cultural tapestry of Nepal.

The Udaaya Museum not only serves as a cultural anchor for the Newa community but also as a vital resource for cultural scholars and enthusiasts from around the globe. Despite facing challenges of visibility and space, the museum remains a cherished space where the rich tapestry of Newa culture is celebrated and preserved. With plans to enhance its presence and accessibility, the Udaaya Museum is poised to welcome a broader audience, inviting them to delve into the depth and diversity of Newa heritage, ensuring that the legacy of the Udaaya Samaj continues to enlighten and inspire future generations.
